I do many things in public that I have been trained to do, and then go home and berate myself thinking, "why the fuck did I do that! That isn't me!"

That later introspection makes it harder and harder for me to do the same thing again. It's the only real defense I can mount against the human need to fit in. Don't beat yourself up over the sentiment of wanting to belong. That's a natural human sentiment. To deny it, and that we care what others think about ourselves, would be to operate under the principle that we are more machine or god than human.

Just never shut off that examination of your actions. If they aren't harming anyone else, though, don't fall into a depressive "I suck" funk. I hardly have to say this, however, because it's already obvious that you already do much of the former.Jennhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05333226493312516551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314153586740792258.post-89042084624037483682008-07-22T19:24:00.000-07:002008-07-22T19:24:00.000-07:00"I could really give a shit about pleasing someone..."I could really give a shit about pleasing someone else by being something I am not."

Exactly.

Being myself is often the most difficult role I can take on. This makes things interesting--especially when I encounter people in more than one context because I tend to behave as others expect of me.

Would you share any tips on how to socialize "better"?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
